NFL + My Medicare?

You turn on the TV these days and are lucky to get through 15 minutes without seeing or hearing an advertisement with an ex-NFL player or celebrity telling you how they saved on their Medicare coverage by calling 1-800… 

Okay, so what plans are they talking about? Are these special plans that are available only if I call this number?  Am I missing out by not calling them? I’m going to fill you in on what the real deal is about these endless advertisements.  

Medicare plans are state and county specific.  Private insurance carriers (Aetna, Humana, Highmark, Geisinger, UPMC, etc.) create and offer Medicare plans in specific geographic areas.  These plans are authorized by Medicare; meaning that Medicare has approved that these insurance carriers can offer these plans and their various features and benefits.  

When you see an advertisement to call a 1-800 Medicare helpline to get plans with special benefits they are offering you the same plans available in your area to anyone who is enrolled in Medicare.  They are not offering any special plans that only they can offer.  They are not an insurance carrier.  This means they are not the company providing the insurance.  They are just providing the channel to enroll in plans available in the state and county you reside in that are offered by the various insurance carriers (Aetna, Humana, Highmark, Geisinger, UPMC, etc.)

Now that you know they are not offering any plans that another independent local insurance agency cannot offer here is some food for thought.   💭
